Lesson 1 - Given Circumstances
The street known as “Road” is in a small Lancashire town just on the outskirts of Bolton. The street is called Road because, at the beginning of the play the sign saying the name of the road has been broken off and the title of the street is unreadable, so it is just referred to as Road.
Scullery- He narrates the daily life of Road. It’s not said in the script where he lives so he is considered as homeless. He is a very shallow character. He drinks, smokes, and steals.
Curt - He is just another drunk on Road. He is just like everyone else in the town. He sums up what Road has become.
Manfred- He is the owner of the local chip shop. He is widely known around town. Based upon his shouting of the specials, we can tell he is aloud mouth, and a show off.
Scotch Girl - She is the assistant to Manfred and has possibly had a past with the soldier.
Bisto - He is a simple disco DJ. He seems to be trying to get every up and dance, but the crowd doesn’t seem to be responding to him.
Soldier - Not much is said about him. He is incredibly drunk and is taken home by Helen.
Eddie’s Dad - Never actually says anything but his actions speak louder than words. He doesn’t get on with his son hence the battle between the television and the Radio. He doesn’t think much of his son, this is shown by him hovering where Eddie has been.
Louise’s Brother - He is very violent towards Louise. He acts almost incestuous towards her at times. He is very lazy as all he does is sleep all day.
Blowpipe- A friend of Scullery. We don’t know a whole lot about Blowpipe. We can tell he is the follows Scullery.
Valerie- She is another middle-aged woman in Road. She is having problems with her husband. She is depressed because she has no money and is convinced her friends hate her for borrowing off them so much.
Skin Lad - He is looked down on by the other members of Road because they think he’s weird. He was apart of a skinhead hate group. He would beat up anyone he felt like. He is the only person on Road who has changed for the better.
Helen - She is a middle-aged woman. She is very lonely and doesn’t have may friends. She could be said to be unattractive as she must pick up the drunken men around town.
Molly - Not quite right in the head. She gets on with everyone and is very slow and old.
Chantal - is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bald. She appears sweet and innocent, but like all of the youth in Road she smokes,drinks, and seduces men. She represents how the future for youth is bleak. She argues with her father and doesn’t listen to them at all. She is in her early teens.
Linda - She is Brian’s daughter, and is 12 years old. She feels neglected by her father.
The Balds - Bald must not be well known because Scullery breaks into his house thinking nobody lived there. Mr and Mrs Bald fight constantly and don’t get on very well. He doesn’t like noise in the street.
Dor and Lane - She and Lane are good friends. They are married and yet go looking for men to sleep with ever night. They, like everyone else on Road, are unhappy with they’re lives.
Barry - He is Dor hook for the night on Road and even sticks up for her and offers her a drink and helps her find her keys.
Marion - Again, just like everyone else in the town, she is consistently drunk. She is Brian’s woman for the night and is persistant to argue with him untill Linda enters. She is very maternal to Linda and favours her over Brian.
Brian - He is the father of Linda. He is determinded to bed Marion who would rather talk and argue. He obviously doens’t think much of her which is revealed when they fight later on. He ignors his daughter Linda and leaves her on her own a lot.
Joey - He is fed up with life at this point. He is extremely pessimistic of the outcome of the what happened to the world and so until the economy gets better he is starving himself. His girlfriend, Clare tries to console him. He continues to starves himself after Clare’s death.
Clare - She is Joey’s girlfriend. She comes from a broken home, her father lost his job She dwells in the past and is very optimistic until she agrees to starve herself with Joey. She dies after professing her love to Joey.
Brenda - She is a lonely woman. She has a daughter, Carol, and they don’t get along that well. She lends money out to others and so she has none, Valerie could be the friend she gives money to. Her only entertainment is annoying her daughter. She has had many sexual experiences with many people and so she doesn’t know who her daughter’s father is.
Eddie - Eddie is in his late teens - early twenties. He doesn’t get along with his Dad. His best mate is Brink and they go through the town trying to get laid and drink. This is a daily routine for them. We can tell Eddie has only sex on the mind when they bring back Carol and Louise. Him and Eddie feel that it is a given that they will sleep with them, the girls have other thoughts about that. After becoming intoxicated with Brink and the girls Eddie goes on arant about being a cowboy and conquering land. He wants to escape. England is in a sorry state,and he just wants to pretend he is a cowboy. He wants to be a hero. He becomes closer with Carol and Louise after that night.
Brink - He seems to have a little more class than Eddie. He isn’t as angry as Eddie. He tries to seduce the girls. In his rant we see him wish to be a cowboy and escape the state he is in. He doesn’t want to be the silent, do-gooder anymore. He tells us of a time he had sex with an older women, and he can’t get rid of that image in his head.
Carol - Her and her Mum don’t get along that well. She walks all over her mother because she can. She yells at her, calls her a slag, and takes money from her. Her and Louise are close friends. She uses Louise as her redemtion because she is ashamed of herself. Her and Louise go back to Brink’s place for some drinks, and they get drunk. Carol, more vocal than Louise, tells the lads that they aren’t just some objects to just put out if they get drunk. In her rant she wants everyone to stop staring at her as a piece of meat. She wants to have conversations with people. She wants guys to stop staring. She is ashamed of her life and wants to get out of Road.
Louise - Her and her brother have a strange relationship. She and Carol are close friends and they go out all most every night. She sees Carol for who she really is and accepts her. She is the quiet, shy one, who goes along with whatever Carol is doing. They go back to Brink’s place, and she quickly unwinds and gets drunk. In her rant, she wants everyone to stop viewing her as the quiet one. She wants to talk to people, and get to know them. She wants a change; she wants to escape. She starts the somehow a somehow might escape.
